Yesterday, April 18, 2018, Minister of National Emergency Management Hon Edmond Castro joined the NEMO Shelter Inspection Committee in Orange Walk as they continued their inspection of shelters in that district in preparation for the upcoming Hurricane Season which officially opens less than six (6) weeks from today, on June 1, 2018.
The Minister visited two shelters along with the inspection team, namely the Government Primary School in Carmelita Village in Orange Walk East; and the Roman Catholic Primary School in the Village of San Luis in Orange Walk North. Both shelters consist of new, sturdy and spacious structures that are properly equipped with adequate facilities to accommodate evacuees in the event of an immediate threat from natural disaster. The Carmelita School has a capacity of 200, and the San Luis School can accommodate 140 persons.
In San Luis, the Minister also took the opportunity to speak with some of the students about the role of NEMO and the public in Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management.
In Orange Walk, the inspection team includes Mitigation Officer Kevin Daniels (Engineer) from NEMO Headquarters; NEMO District Coordinator Suleima Celiz and Assistant Coordinator Michael Neal; as well as local representatives from the Fire Department, Police Department, Health Department, and the respective municipal and village councils.
This exercise has been occurring countrywide as part of NEMO’s routine and comprehensive program of preparation in advance of every hurricane season.
